If anybody is still repeating that tired old line that the Rocky Mountain News is a “liberal paper,” they can certainly stop now. The News announced its endorsements for the State House today, and they are so absurdly one-sided that it’s hard to even take them seriously. And we mean “one-sided” literally; not because we don’t agree, but because they made no effort to conceal the fact that they really weren’t even going to consider endorsing Democrats.
In only one seat considered even somewhat competitive did the News pick a Democrat over a Republican: HD-38 (Joe Rice). The only other Democrats the News endorsed are in seats where the Dem isn’t going to lose…and where their endorsement isn’t going to matter.
If the News could have figured out a way to endorse nobody in seats where only a Democrat is running, you get the feeling they would have tried. This is really an embarassment to the editorial board at the News because of the transparency of what happened. There are plenty of incumbent Democrats in competitive districts that they could have thrown a bone just to make it look like the process was unbiased, but they didn’t even make that effort.
